Tsubosaka Temple in Nara was established in the 8th century where worshipers often visit to pray to a large statue of Kannon Bodhisattva to protect the health of their eyes. In this rare woodblock print, we see the stairway approaching the temple grounds on a rainy day. Produced by Ishiwata Koitsu, but signed Yoshimi, this rare work was produced as a special occasion woodblock print.

Ishiwata Koitsu (1897-1987) didn't receive the acclaim of his contemporaries such as Hasui Kawase or Ito Shinsui during the shin-hanga period, but nevertheless his designs remain coveted among collectors today.
