The Kasuga Shrine in Nara was built in the 8th century for the Fujiwara clan. Here, the bright red fascade of the shrine's gate is contrasted against an overcast sky and dense trees. Two visitors to the shrine are shown braving the rain. A masterfully detailed work from a later edition printing from the original woodblocks.

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is one of Japan's most important artists to emerge from the shin-hanga era. His prints are recognized throughout the world, with many of his woodblock prints elevating to icons of art and design.
