Utagawa Yoshitora, "Minamoto no Yoshitsune Encounters a Typhoon in Daimotsu Bay"

    $0.00

A spectacular work by Yoshitora illustrating the famous story of 12th century warrior Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his forces encountering a fierce typhoon in Daimotsu Bay. The storm is said to have been conjured up by the ghosts of the Taira clan, who were defeated by Yoshitsune. In this triptych, the priest-warrior Musashi Benkei is shown on the bow of the boat summoning his spiritual powers to cast the ghosts away. Yoshitsune is shown in the right panel looking on while his soldiers fight off a large contingent of ghosts.

     Date: c. 1848
    Size: Oban Triptych
    Publisher: Izumiya Ichibei

Utagawa Yoshitora (1836-1880) was a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi whose later works focused on documenting the modernization of the Meiji-period and of his woodblock prints of foreigners (or Yokohama-e).
