Utagawa Toyokuni III, "Actors in the Role of Suikoden"

The 108 Popular Heroes of the Suikoden (Water Margin) is one of China's greatest classical novels written in the 14th century. The tome centers on a group of 108 outlaws gathered within Liangshan Marsh whose heroic tales of bravery and service made them historical folk heroes in both China and Japan.

This fine and rare triptych by Toyokuni III shows three stunningly detailed actors set against an wonderfully detailed backdrop of foliage and full moon. Particularly striking in this image are the designs on the clothing and robes. In the center, the actor holds a shakuhashi. A stunning design!

Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III) (1786-1865) is one of Japan's most prolific and well-known Japanese woodblock print artists to emerge during the peak of ukiyo-e period printmaking. As was common among Japanese artists at the time, his moniker evolved from his teacher and master, Toyokuni I (1769-1825), as his prominence grew.
