    Hasui Kawase, "Morning at Nijubashi"

Traversing the moat surrounding the Imperial Castle in Tokyo, the Nijubashi was originally constructed using two levels of wooden beams, hence the name "double bridge." The bridge was rebuilt of iron in the 1960s. In this richly colored later edition printing from the original woodblocks, the Nijubashi is shown set against a rising sun and reflecting off the water below.

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is one of Japan's most important artists to emerge from the shin-hanga era. His prints are recognized throughout the world, with many of his woodblock prints elevating to icons of art and design.
