In this stunning and rare kakemono by the great Hiroshige, a flock of tancho cranes fly above crashing waves while a large setting sun looms in the background. The classic motifs in the composition tie in together marvelously and all of the elements are masterfully combined to appear as if viewing a poem.

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is the most important Japanese artist to emerge from Edo period ukiyo-e.
