Yashima Gakutei, "Yoshitsune at Amagasaki"

One of Japan's most famous military leaders in history, Minamoto no Yoshitsune is shown in full regalia at Amagasaki. Yoshitsune is shown contemplating this next move to avoid capture from his pursuers from the Yoritomo clan following the Genpei Wars of the 12th century. A rare surimono woodblock print by Gakutei, which were gift-prints produced in very limited editions for special occasions.

Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868) was a poet and woodblock print artist who trained under Katsushika Hokusai and Totoya Hokkei. Gakutei is best known for his surimono woodblock prints, which were produced in small editions as gift prints.
