Hiroshige III (Shigemasa), "View from Eitai Bridge, Tokyo"

    $1,375.00

Spanning the Sumida River in Tokyo and connecting Fukugawa with Nihonbashi, the Eitai Bridge serves as a major thoroughfare for residents of Tokyo. Originally built in 1698 in timber, the bridge collapsed in 1807 as residents celebrated during a festival. The bridge collapsed again during the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake and was rebuilt using steel. In this woodblock print by Hiroshige III, we see the bridge in its second iteration, crowded with residents and flanked by boats and the dense neighborhoods of Sumida's banks. Mount Fuji looms in the distance while the vivid vermillion sky signals sunset. The design is a marvelous snapshot of life during the Meiji Restoration.

    Date: 1875
    Size: Oban Triptych

Utagawa Hiroshige III (1842-1894) was a pupil of the great Ando Hiroshige who was also known as Shigemasa. Although he did not achieve the level of fame as his master or his peer, Hiroshige II, Hiroshige III produced some notable designs at the height of the Meiji-period.
