Chiura Obata, "The Moonlight"
Pickup currently unavailable
Starting in 1956, Chiura Obata began production of a small series of woodblock prints in collaboration with Uchida Bijitsu Shoshi Han in Kyoto, one of the 20th century's most important publishers of woodblock prints. The works depict the Japanese garden of the Carr family, which they named "Shiho-en" meaning that its beauty can be appreciated from all directions. One design would be issued per year as Christmas cards sent to family and friends, and up to seven designs are said to have been completed, with five more only in proof form.
This second design in the series portrays the American River near Sacramento, CA, located directly opposite Shiho-en. Across the water, a cluster of fireflies glows in the evening light, while Obata composed the scene from within Shiho-en, standing beneath a white oak tree as he looked out over the river. The print is rendered with exquisite skill, especially in its printed gradations. The print is sold with its original folder (10" x7") and was detached from its mounting. This marvelous and rare work is one of five available at Tokaido Arts.
