In this series of works by Kunisada II, the story of Prince Siddhartha (the historical Buddha in Japan) and his life journey to enlightenment is contextualized into modern day life in Edo-period Japan. Entitled “Life of the Buddha in Up-to-Date Magic Lantern Slides” (Shaka hasso ki imayo utsushi-e), Tokaido Arts is pleased to present all twenty-four of these marvelous designs from the entire series, all in excellent condition with vibrant colors. The works exhibited here exemplify the extraordinary ability of woodblock print artists such as Kunisada II turning ancient narratives into meticulous and captivating designs.

Utagawa Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) was a pupil of Utagawa Kunisada (a.k.a. Toyokuni III) and took over the Utagawa school following his master's death in 1865. He is also known as Toyokuni IV.
