Shin-Hanga
Eijiro Kobayashi, "High Bridge in Evening"
Pickup currently unavailable
Published starting in the 1910s, the night scene prints of Hasegawa/Nishinomiya are atmospheric and unburdened by large amounts of color. Dominated by palettes of blue and black, the simplicity of the designs are striking.
One of the most sought after designs in this series, Eijiro shows a boat navigating through the supports of a bridge, which is busy with pedestrians. The silhouette of the buildings in the background cast their light into the water. Richly colored and exquisitely printed, the artist's composition is heavily influenced by British artist James Whistler's painting of the Thames River from the 1870s.
