Kiyoshi Saito's hometown of Aizu in Fukushima prefecture was a regular source of inspiration for many of Saito's most famous woodblock prints. Here we see the mountains of Aizu and a small lake in a simple and rich palette of blue and red printed in his signature style. The sky in printed in a silver mica. A rare and early work by one of Japan's contemporary masters.

Kiyoshi Saito (1907-1997) was a master printmaker who burst into the international art world with a prize at the Sao Paolo Biennial in 1951, thus cementing his legacy as a world renowned Japanese artist. He is considered by many to be one of the 20th century's most important contemporary artists to emerge from Japan in the post-war period.
