Miki Suizan, "Omuro Blossoms"

The Ninna-ji Temple in Kyoto is a popular spot for viewing the blossoms of the omuro cherry tree in late Spring. In this rare print by Miki Suizan, visitors to the temple are seen lounging on the benches enjoying the blossoms in bloom. Wonderful colors and the idyllic setting of the woodblock print draws the viewer into the scene. One of eight landscapes by Suizan as part of his series, “New Selection of Noted Places in Kyoto.”

Miki Suizan (1887-1957) was an accomplished painter of bijin-ga (beautiful women). He created only fourteen woodblock prints in his lifetime as part of a two-part series, “New Selection of Noted Places in Kyoto.” The first series consisted of landscapes, while the second were bijin-ga portraits.
