Paul Jacoulet, "Indigo: Portrait of a Chamorro Woman"

Paul Jacoulet's series "Seven Women of the South Seas" was printed in a "rainbow" of seven different palettes for each design and pays homage to the indigenous women of the Marianna Islands. Printed in only a small edition of 150 each, it was Jacoulet's first print series produced in his life and career as an artist. Each design is printed with extraordinary attention to detail. 

In this "indigo" design, a woman poses with her back to the viewer while sitting on a large patterned seat. The lines on her skirt are printed with silver mica.

Paul Jacoulet (1902-1960) was French printmaker who spent most of his life in Japan producing woodblock prints of his travels in the South Seas, Korea, Manchuria, and Japan.
