The Uji River just outside of Kyoto center to the south is known to be a place where fireflies gather in the evening. Locals often come to view the fireflies fly frenetically as if in battle. A striking design showing fireflies and the town's lights and contrasting with the dark blue evening sky.

Tomikichiro Tokuriki (1902-1999) created his 36 Views of Mount Fuji from 1939-1940, which is now considered his masterpiece series of woodblock prints. The prints are an homage to Katsushika Hokusai’s series, 100 years before Tokuriki’s time.
