Yoshikawa Kanpo, "After A Snow at Yamatobashi, Kyoto"

The Higashiyama Ward in Kyoto is home to a canal and avenue lined with shops and homes. The Yamato bridge traverses this canal and is shown in the distance flanked by a row of buildings. In this rare, first-edition woodblock print by Yoshikawa Kanpo - one of only a few landscapes created by the artist - the erratic and brushlike lines along with the muted colors is anime-like in its overall effect. Like the other landscape woodblock prints by Kanpo, this piece stands apart from anything done by his contemporaries (e.g. Hasui Kawase, Hiroshi Yoshida). A marvelous example of the creativity emerging from Japan during the shin-hanga period.

Yoshikawa Kanpo (1894-1979) was a Kyoto-based artist who is regarded as a pioneer of kabuki actor woodblock print portraits during the shin-hanga period. Kanpo created less than a dozen woodblock prints during his artistic career and made a living as a painter and aficionado of kabuki plays.
