Shin-Hanga
Arai Yoshimune, "Fishing Boat"
Pickup currently unavailable
Published starting in the 1910s, the night scene prints of Hasegawa/Nishinomiya are atmospheric and unburdened by large amounts of color. Dominated by palettes of blue and black, the simplicity of the designs are striking.
In this scarce design, a fisherman trawls for fish using a large net in the light of a fire. A pedestrian bridge frames the composition from above (note the family watching the fisherman) and the shoreline in the background adds to the romantic mood of the scene. An untrimmed, very early edition printing with publisher markings verso.
