Chinsai Rosetsu, "Taira no Shigmori and Minamoto no Yoshihira in Battle"

The Heiji Rebellion of the 12th century was a brief civil conflict between the rival Taira and Minamoto clans. Though short-lived, the struggle foreshadowed the Genpei War of 1180–1185, which brought an end to the Heian era and ultimately established Minamoto rule from Kamakura. Here, Taira no Shigemori pursues Minamoto no Yoshihira on horseback amid a hail of arrows. The two warriors are framed in a fierce and dynamic pursuit against a striking deep-yellow background, making this a uniquely marvelous design.
