Under British colonial rule since the 1820s, a festive street is shown adorned with New Year lanterns. The women are dressed in traditional Malay garments (kebaya) and enjoying a clear morning. Awash in cool blues and vibrant morning hues, this rare woodblock print by Elizabeth Keith is a convivial street scene with wonderful detailing throughout.

Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956) was a Scottish printmaker who documented her travels in Japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia through woodblock prints, paintings, and etchings. A number of her woodblock prints were produced in collaboration with Watanabe Shozaburo in the early 20th century.
