Hasui Kawase, "Arakawa River, Moonlight"

The Arakawa River, which runs from Saitama Prefecture through Tokyo, is shown from the banks in Akabane. Marvelously printed night scene with a full moon casting its light throughout the composition. This scarce woodblock print comes from a later edition printing from the original woodblocks.

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is one of Japan's most important artists to emerge from the shin-hanga era. His prints are recognized throughout the world, with many of his woodblock prints elevating to icons of art and design.
