    The use of sepia color throughout this woodblock print gives this piece an ethereal and peaceful atmosphere. Built in the 11th century, Phoenix Hall is in Kyoto Prefecture. Printed from the original woodblocks, this later edition print is now scarce.

    Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is one of Japan’s most important artists to emerge from the shin-hanga era. His prints are recognized throughout the world, with many of his woodblock prints elevating to icons of art and design.
