Kinkakuji, or the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto's most famous and visited temples. Dating to the 14th century, the original pavilion was burned down shortly after being built and then again in 1950. This design shows the "original" temple from the pre-war period. A very rare shikishiban woodblock print by Hasui Kawase from the first-edition printing by Kato Junji limited to 200 impressions. Part of series of twelve designs by Hasui Kawase printed by Junji in this format for mounting onto a fan.

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is one of Japan's most important artists to emerge from the shin-hanga era. His prints are recognized throughout the world, with many of his woodblock prints elevating to icons of art and design.
