Hasui Kawase, "Namikiri, Shima"

Shima is a coastal town in Mie Prefecture. Here we see a man walking down a stone path towards the beach and water. The intricate details of the buildings contrasts beautifully with the vibrant colors of the sea and light cast upon the clouds in the sky.

Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is one of Japan's most important artists to emerge from the shin-hanga era. His prints are recognized throughout the world, with many of his woodblock prints elevating to icons of art and design.
