Kyoto's Imperial Palace is shown awash in snow. A snow covered tree is prominently set in the foreground to give prominence to the Palace's natural setting. The Imperial Palace was the former seat of Japan's Emperor until the Meiji-era starting in 1867. One of eight landscapes by Suizan as part of his series, “New Selection of Noted Places in Kyoto.”

Miki Suizan (1887-1957) was an accomplished painter of bijin-ga (beautiful women). He created only fourteen woodblock prints in his lifetime as part of a two-part series, “New Selection of Noted Places in Kyoto.” The first series consisted of landscapes, while the second were bijin-ga portraits.
