One of Meiji-period Japan's most famous woodblock print artists, this rare print by Ogata Gekko is exceptional for its simplicity in design and the quality of the printing. The composition is solitary with few background details, but the true to nature depiction of the carp is impressive.

Ogata Gekko (1859-1920) was one of the Meiji-periods most important woodblock print artists. Self-taught, Gekko produced a number of war prints celebrating Japan's military victories in China and Russia, as well as series works of Japanese history and culture, and of nature.
