Shiro Kasamatsu, "Evening at Suwa Shrine, Nippori"

Once boasting grand views of Mount Fuji and Tokyo, Suwa Shrine was built in the 13th century and sits on a hillside in Nippori, Tokyo. The beauty of this work by Shiro is the contrast of colors between the yellow, pink, and blue/green sky and the stone walkway in the shade. A wonderfully captivating composition.

Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) began his artistic career during the shin-hanga period and would go on to produce some of Japan's most recognizable woodblock prints. Starting in second-half of the 20th century, Shiro would go on to carve, print, and publish his own prints, making him an influential artist in the sosaku-hanga movement as well.
