Shinobazu Pond is set within the grounds of Ueno Park in Tokyo and is often cited by Japanese woodblock print artists in works dating back to the 1800s. In this work by Shiro Kasamatsu, Shinobazu pond is shown in the evening and the artist has washed the composition in a light blue. Light from the lanterns illuminate the composition, which is dense with details showing the pond's garden.

Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991) began his artistic career during the shin-hanga period and would go on to produce some of Japan's most recognizable woodblock prints. Starting in second-half of the 20th century, Shiro would go on to carve, print, and publish his own prints, making him an influential artist in the sosaku-hanga movement as well.
