Published starting in the 1910s, the night scene prints of Hasegawa/Nishinomiya are atmospheric and unburdened by large amounts of color. Dominated by palettes of blue and black, the simplicity of the designs are striking.
In this work by Shoda Koho, pedestrians traverse Ohashi bridge connecting the Tokyo district of Nihonbashi in the evening. In the background points of light from the silhouetted buildings reflecting off the water contrasts with the vibrant lights from the lanterns. An early edition printing.
