Catching fireflies on warm summer evenings was a traditional Japanese pastime that celebrated both the season and the insects’ brief, luminous lives. In this work by Shotei, figures drift leisurely along a lake, watching fireflies glow across the water, while others relax in a nearby lakeside house, enjoying the summer night.
