    Taira no Shigemori was a descendant of the Taira clan who lived in the 12th century. In this portrait, Yoshitoshi memorializes Shigemori as the embodiment of humanity. The black coloring in Shigmori's robe is printed in two tones to highlight the details and folds.

    Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a master painter and woodblock print artist whose works have made an indelible mark on Japanese art and design to this day. His most famous series, "One Hundred Aspects of the Moon," comprise some of Yoshitoshi's best known designs.
