Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige, "Station 53: Otsu"

Running along the banks of Lake Biwa, Otsu station is the last of the stations along the Tokaido before entering Kyoto. In this design, it is spring time and the magnificence of Lake Biwa is shown from high atop Mii Temple and the town. In the distance sits Mount Ibuki on the Eastern shore of the lake.

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is the most important Japanese artist to emerge from Edo period ukiyo-e. His woodblock prints are highly coveted by collectors and museums around the world.
