Utagawa (Ando) Hiroshige, "Tango Province: Amanohashidate"

The sandbar of Amanohashidate, in Miyazu Bay in Tango Province (modern-day Kyoto Prefecture), is one of Japan’s most celebrated and inspirational natural vistas, captivating artists and poets for more than a thousand years. Here, the slender sandbar seems to float within the composition, while a torii gate can be seen among the trees below, welcoming visitors to the Shinto shrine. This work comes from Hiroshige’s "Famous Views of the Sixty-Odd Provinces," a celebrated series comprising sixty-nine landscapes.
