Cao Cao ruled over the Eastern Han dynasty until the eve of the Three Kingdoms period in 3rd century China. His achievements and military victories were memorialized in the 14th century Chinese novel, "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms," which became a popular historical and military story in Japan.
In this triptych, Cao Cao and his ally Soso receives Lu Bu and his generals as they surrender. The clothing of the figures are elaborately detailed throughout. Note the screen in the right panel decorated with a mountain scape and waterfall.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) is one of Japan's greatest masters of ukiyo-e printmaking from the Edo period. Many of Kuniyoshi's works are regarded today as archetypes of woodblock prints produced during the Edo period and highly prized by collectors.
