Utagawa Kuniyoshi, "Kiso Yoshinaka at the Battle of Northland Region"

In this marvelous design by Kuniyoshi, the forces of Kiso Yoshinaka of the Minamoto clan is shown in battle against his enemies in the Northern region of Japan in an attempt to consolidate his rule during the tumultuous period of the Genpei War from 1180-1185. Yoshinaka is shown watching the battle from his horse on an outcropping (right panel). On the left, two warriors are steeped in battle as they tumble along a small cliff and waterfall.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) is one of Japan's greatest masters of ukiyo-e printmaking from the Edo period. Many of Kuniyoshi's works are regarded today as archetypes of woodblock prints produced during the Edo period and highly prized by collectors.
