Yoshimoto Gesso, "Pine Tree at Karasaki"

Originally produced in c. 1930s, the night scene prints of Hasegawa/Nishinomiya are atmospheric and unburdened by large amounts of color. Dominated by palettes of blue and black, the simplicity of the designs are striking. Here we see a fishing boat lit by a fire, used for fishing, way finding, and warmth set against an imposing grove of pine trees. Simple and stunning.
