In this chuban size woodblock print, a bust portrait of the kabuki actor Arashi Rikan is shown from a popular play staged in the Chikugo Theater in Osaka, "Keisei Ishikawazome." Wonderful detailing in the costume and a beautiful blue backdrop are standouts in the composition.

Hirosada Utagawa (active 1820-1860) is one of Osaka's most prolific and famous artists of kabuki actor woodblock prints from the region, or kamigata-e. His works exemplify the compositions and designs of prints produced in the region during the Edo period.
