Utagawa Kuniyoshi, "Sasaki Moritsuna Attacks Taira Clan at Kojima"

Defeated at Ichi-no-tani by the Minamoto clan and Yoshitsune during the 12th century Genpei War in Japn, the Taira clan flees to Honshu but are pursued by Minamoto no Noriyori. In this magnificent design, Minamoto's forces, led by General Sasaki Moritsuna, are shown crossing the shallow strait separating Kojima from Honshu. The triptych is a vivid display of Kuniyoshi's talent in capturing the drama and intensity of the pursuit while incorporating the beauty of a setting sun over water in glorious detail.

Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) is one of Japan's greatest masters of ukiyo-e printmaking from the Edo period. Many of Kuniyoshi's works are regarded today as archetypes of woodblock prints produced during the Edo period and highly prized by collectors.
