    The complex of Buddhist temples at Zentsuji in Shikoku was established in the 9th century. In this design by Hasui Kawase, the intricately detailed gate and stone lantern sit imposingly in the foreground while the pagoda at Zentsuji looms overhead. Beautifully colored and printed.

    Hasui Kawase (1883-1957) is one of Japan's most important artists to emerge from the shin-hanga era. His prints are recognized throughout the world, with many of his woodblock prints elevating to icons of art and design.
